Mechanical, electrical, chemical, and electrochemical energy storage systems are essential for energy applications and conservation, including large-scale energy preservation [5], [6]. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in electrical energy storage (EES) devices and systems, primarily prompted by their remarkable energy storage
The cost of an energy storage system is often application-dependent. Carnegie et al. [94] identify applications that energy storage devices serve and compare costs of storage devices for the applications. In addition, costs of an energy storage system for a given application vary notably based on location, construction method and size, and the
The applications of energy storage systems have been reviewed in the last section of this paper including general applications, energy utility applications, renewable energy utilization, buildings and communities, and transportation. Finally, recent developments in energy storage systems and some associated research avenues have been discussed.
Feature papers represent the most advanced research with significant potential for high impact in the field. A Feature Paper should be a substantial original Article that involves several techniques or approaches, provides an outlook for future research directions and describes possible research applications.
