The financing package for the project, worth over US$200 million, through loans and grants from six institutions, marks the first large-scale infrastructure project for Solomon Islands to be developed as a public-private partnership (PPP).
The Solomon Islands has one of the lowest electrification rates in the world and is heavily reliant on expensive, imported diesel fuel, which is highly polluting. This has resulted in electricity prices being among the highest in the world with the reliance on imported fuel also exposing the country to global fuel price fluctuations and shocks.
The World Bank is currently committing more than US$196 million in active projects and support to Solomon Islands. In addition to the Tina River Hydro Project, this includes a further US$19 million to improve access to renewable energy, as well as US$51 million to improve roads and airports, and US$25 million to supporting rural development.
Surrounded by the stunning crystal blue Pacific Ocean, the Solomon Islands is a remote archipelago rich in natural resources. It is also the scenic backdrop for the largest hydropower development project in the Pacific region; a 15MW dam at an estimated cost of US$240.8 million to be commissioned by 2025.
