In a bold announcement, Portugal recently surpassed its entire solar output from 2023 by September 2024, celebrating a record year for solar energy production. According to REN (Rede de Energia Nacional), the country generated more than 3.99 TWh of solar energy in just the first nine months, exceeding last year's total of 3.6 TWh.
Portugal’s cumulative PV capacity hit 2.59 GW at the end of 2022, outpacing the growth of other renewable energy sources. The latest statistics from Portugal's Directorate General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) also show that the country added just 118 MW of new solar capacity in the first four months of 2023.
Because Portugal is one of the countries in Europe with the greatest availability of solar radiation. Our country has 2,500 to 3,200 hours of sunshine per year, an average of 4 to 6 hours in winter and 10 to 12 hours in summer. In other words, Portugal has this clean, abundant and free energy as a source for producing electricity.
Portugal, however, offers room for expansion in the self-consumption and floating solar markets. The Portuguese government devised two market mechanisms, auctions and direct agreements, with the goal of installing 9 GW of PV capacity by 2030. Permitting issues, though, might be impeding the accomplishment of this objective.
Of this amount, 69.7 million euros were spent by the Portuguese on solar panels, 51.3 million on heat pumps and 45.8 million on efficient windows. Now, the Government has decided to change the rules of the game.
BloombergNEF predicts that Portugal's solar installations will reach 1,363 MW by the end of 2023, a substantial increase compared to 890 MW last year.
