Islands Energy Group is made up of three businesses based in Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man – Guernsey Energy, Island Energy and Isle of Man Energy. It is the only gas supplier for domestic, commercial and industrial customers in the islands. It also sells domestic appliances including cookers and washing machines.
The majority of the Isle of Man’s electricity is currently sourced from fossil fuels. The interconnector is a source of carbon neutral electricity on island and also provides a route to export electricity to the GB Market.
Electricity generation is responsible for approximately 33% of all greenhouse gas emissions on the Isle of Man, and a majority of this is currently sourced from fossil fuels (natural gas). Without the decarbonisation1 of electricity, it will not be possible to reduce carbon emissions significantly in other areas such as heating and transport.
Given the high proportion of wind being installed in both UK and Irish waters over the next ten – thirty years (see Fig. 9 and Fig. 10) there may be limited opportunity to export power generated from offshore wind from the Isle of Man to GB, if it has to be brought onto the island first.
It is unlikely that the export of intermittent renewables will be profitable for the Isle of Man given the reasons outlined in this document. The Isle of Man currently imports all of its energy from the UK (with the exception of what is produced from Sulby).
