The Lao People''s Democratic Republic (Lao P.D.R) gets more than 70 % of its energy from conventional sources, which emphasizes the urgent need to switch to renewable energy. This
ASEAN member Laos has plans to increase renewable energy in its power mix, notably solar power buildout. However, it continues to rely on hydropower and coal-fired power plants to generate electricity, complicating both its way forward and decarbonisation plans.
The company''s production base in Laos plans to build 9GW of battery plates and 3GW of high-efficiency solar cell panel assembly equipment, on a construction site of about 32 hectares, which is
Increase Energy export to boost national socio-economic development; Reserve coal for domestic use and power generation; Increase power export to 12,000 MW by 2020, 7,000 MW to Thailand and 5,000 MW to Viet Nam. Increase a share of other renewable energy to 30% in the total energy mix by 2025;
The Lao People''s Democratic Republic (Lao P.D.R) gets more than 70 % of its energy from conventional sources, which emphasizes the urgent need to switch to renewable energy. This study looks at the supply and demand scenario for energy in the Lao P.D.R.
In 2021, the Lao government vowed to diversify sources of energy by building solar, wind and coal-fired power plants to address the electricity shortage during the dry season, when reservoir levels drop and less hydropower can be produced.
2021–2025 and the energy and renewable energy plans reveals a nearly singular focus on electricity (Government of Lao PDR, 2011; MEM, 2021). Other energy sources have received limited attention in energy planning, despite biomass, oil, gas, and petroleum derivatives making up the majority of total

According to the Mekong River Commission Study in 1995, Lao PDR has 26,000 MW of potential hydropower reserve. However, until 2017 only 4,706 MW of installed capacity or 18.1% of total potential has been realised. The other renewable energy share comes from solar (0.48 MW), biogas (0.29 MW) and biomass (39.7 MW).
