The most basic structure of the microgrid is divided into three layers, as depicted in Fig. 1.5—local control (LC) layer in the bottom, followed by centralized control (CC) layer, and in the uppermost is the distribution network and dispatch layer. Fig. 1.6 describes the composition of three layers of microgrid.
The smart grid architecture has been shown with its all system integrations and components in the figure. The lower layers represent power system along smart grid. It visualizes each component at bulk generation, transmission, and distribution, energy storage, DG, and consumer sections.
Later, communication systems of smart grid are presented in which the communi-cation systems are classified into two groups as wired and wireless communication systems, and they are comprehensively analyzed.
First of all, this chapter focuses on the main components of smart grids such as smart sensors and sensor networks, phasor measurement unit (PMU), smart meters (SMs), and wireless sensor networks (WSNs).
This necessitates a dedicated communication system for microgrid operation. Consortium for Electrical Reliability Technology Solutions (CERTS) has established that a without communication microgrid structure is a desired microgrid structure.
