The majority of primary energy came from fossil fuels, with natural gas, coal and oil the main sources. Hydroelectricity, the only significant renewable source in the country, accounted for about 2% of the primary energy supply. Natural gas is the source for 73.8% of electricity production, followed by hydroelectricity with 21.4%.

Uzbekistan relied on fossil fuels for 93% of its electricity in 2022. Its emissions per capita were above the global average. Uzbekistan''s largest source of clean electricity is hydro (6%). Its share of wind and solar is less than 1% and is below the global average (13%) as well as its neighbour Kazakhstan (5% in 2023).
